So, I went out and bought books by Jacqueline Woodson, Sandra Cisneros, Julia Alvarez. She said, 'None of these books are about us. In her speech Acevedo said, "Finally, I asked her, 'What would you like to read?' And her reply took me aback. ![]() She spoke of a student who did not like to read refusing all the books Acevedo offered her. The author used to be a teacher and she explained a student inspired her to write this book. However she gets a chance to join the slam poetry club of her school and she's torn, for though she has a lot to say, she knows the world does not want to hear it. The Poet X is about Xiomara Batista, a young girl who gives vent to her emotions by writing poetry. ![]()
